The two strands of DNA are named based on whether they will be used as a template for RNA or not. This signals the DNA to unwind so the enzyme can “read” the bases of DNA. Transcription begins when the enzyme RNA polymerase binds to a region of a gene called the promoter sequence. Codons are complementary groups of bases in mRNA.
